Our Mission
Black Feminist Social Work™ exists to advance social work education, practice, and leadership by centering Black feminist thought as an essential framework for ethical, culturally responsive, and justice-oriented practice. Black Feminist Social Work™ is both a framework for understanding the profession and a praxis for transforming it.
We translate Black feminist theories, histories, and lived experiences into accessible, evidence-informed resources for clinicians, students, educators, researchers, and organizations. Through education, research, professional development, and community engagement, we cultivate reflective, justice-oriented practitioners who critically examine systems of oppression while advancing healing, equity, and liberation. Grounded in the belief that Black women’s knowledge is indispensable to the future of social work, we seek to expand the profession’s understanding of trauma, resilience, intersectionality, and collective care. Our mission is to inspire ethical leadership and transformative practice that strengthens individuals, communities, and institutions.
Our Vision
We envision a social work profession in which Black feminist thought is recognized as an essential foundation for social work education, research, policy, and practice, creating systems of care that honor the dignity, wisdom, and lived experiences of Black women while advancing liberation for all communities.

Our Approach
At Black Feminist Social Work™, we believe effective practice requires more than technical competence. It requires historical awareness, cultural humility, structural analysis, and meaningful relationships with the communities we serve. Our approach is grounded in Black feminist thought, recognizing that Black women’s knowledge has long expanded our understanding of trauma, resilience, relationships, healing, and social change. We translate scholarship into practical tools that strengthen ethical, culturally responsive, and justice-centered practice.
Through education, research, and critical reflection, we encourage practitioners to move beyond individual-level interventions and consider the broader social, historical, and structural forces that shape people’s lives. We believe meaningful practice emerges when knowledge is paired with humility, compassion, accountability, and a commitment to liberation. Whether you are a student, clinician, educator, researcher, or organizational leader, our goal is to support your growth as a reflective practitioner who promotes healing while challenging inequitable systems of care.
Our Educational Philosophy
We believe meaningful learning is:
Historically grounded: Understanding the historical context that shapes present-day practice.
Evidence-informed: Integrating research with professional expertise and lived experience.
Intersectional: Recognizing how race, gender, class, sexuality, disability, and other identities interact to influence experiences.
Trauma-informed: Centering safety, healing, resilience, and empowerment.
Justice-oriented: Challenging systemic inequities while promoting equitable outcomes.
Reflective: Encouraging continual self-examination, curiosity, and professional growth.
